Privacy Policy
KoeLab ("the App") is an iOS app that helps you observe your voice for Japanese-language articulation training. This policy explains what information the App handles and how it is used.
1. Information the App Handles
You do not need to create an account or provide your name, email address, or phone number to use the core features of the App. Your recorded audio itself is not sent to any external server for analysis. The App creates and keeps the following information on your device:
- Profile information (optional, e.g. gender and age band)
- Session records (scores, timestamps, and analysis results such as weak morae)
- Audio recordings (stored on your device only, as described below)
- App settings (such as reminder time preference)
2. How Voice Data Is Handled
- Recording is performed via
AVAudioEngine(an Apple framework) at 16 kHz, mono, 32-bit float. - Recorded audio is stored inside the App's dedicated area on your device.
- Recording, analysis, and scoring take place on your device. Your recorded audio itself is not sent to any external server for analysis.
- Audio files are marked to be excluded from iCloud backups.
- You can remove all recordings and session records at any time via "Settings › Delete All Data" inside the App.
3. Permissions and Their Purpose
The App requests the following permissions. Each is used to process your voice on your device, without sending the recorded audio itself to any external server.
- Microphone (NSMicrophoneUsageDescription): Used to record your voice for on-device analysis.
- Speech Recognition (NSSpeechRecognitionUsageDescription): Used to transcribe your speech in order to compute an articulation score. The App relies on Apple's on-device speech recognition model, so speech recognition runs on your device. A one-time download from Apple's servers is required to fetch Apple's on-device model itself (this is Apple's infrastructure, not a server operated by the App provider).
- Notifications (UNUserNotificationCenter): Used to schedule practice reminders (three times a week, opt-in) as local notifications on your device.
4. Where Data Is Stored
- Profile, session records, and practice history are stored on your device via Apple's
SwiftData. - Audio files are stored inside the App's
RecordingStoredirectory on your device. - Settings are stored on your device via iOS
UserDefaults.
None of this data is stored on a server operated by the App provider. If you lose or wipe your iPhone / iPad, this data is lost as well.
5. Third-Party Sharing and External Services
The App provider does not sell or provide your recorded audio or personally identifiable information to any third party.
To deliver its functionality, the App relies on the platform provided by Apple and, where necessary, on other technical components. If we later begin to use anonymized or aggregated statistics for improvement or usage analysis, we will update this policy in advance to describe such use. Even in that case, your recorded audio itself will not be sent to any external server.
6. About This Website
This website (koelab-web.pages.dev) serves static content for viewing only. At present, it does not set its own cookies, trackers, or analytics. Standard access logs (such as IP address and timestamp) retained by our hosting provider (Cloudflare) for service-provisioning purposes are governed by Cloudflare's own privacy policy.
7. Children's Privacy
The App does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If a child under 13 uses the App, please do so under adult supervision.
8. How to Delete Your Data
Use "Settings › Delete All Data" inside the App to instantly and permanently remove:
- Profile (gender, age band, weak-mora info)
- All session records (training, practice, tutorial history)
- All recorded audio
- All scheduled practice reminders
Alternatively, deleting the App itself from iOS removes all associated data.
9. Changes to This Policy
This policy may be updated in response to legal changes or updates to the App. Material changes are reflected by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, announced inside the App.
